Intent

In delivering quality Science education at Buckshaw Primary School, the intent is to foster a curiosity and passion for the subject, enabling pupils to develop a deep understanding of scientific concepts and processes. The intent is rooted in providing a curriculum that is well-sequenced, knowledge-rich, and ambitious, ensuring that all pupils acquire the scientific knowledge and skills needed to succeed academically and in their future endeavours. When planning for the science curriculum, we intend for children to have the opportunity, wherever possible, to learn through practical investigations, leading to them being equipped for life to ask and answer scientific questions about the world around them. Furthermore, the intent is to instil a love for exploration, experimentation, and critical thinking, cultivating a generation of young learners who are inquisitive, confident, and capable of engaging with the world through a scientific lens.

Implementation

We will achieve the intent of quality Science education through a broad and progressive science curriculum incorporating practical investigations; sound knowledge and real-world applications to engage and challenge all pupils. Through the Learning Challenge Curriculum, Science lessons will be ambitious and teachers will use their knowledge of the children to ensure the lessons are differentiated to meet the needs of all learners. The children at Buckshaw Primary School will have access to a range of scientific equipment to explore, discover and develop their scientific knowledge and skills through practical and hands-on learning. Implementing regular formative and summative assessments to track progress, identifying areas for development, and providing constructive feedback to pupils will encourage further exploration and growth.

Impact

The impact of quality Science education is evident through pupils demonstrating secure knowledge and understanding of key scientific concepts and vocabulary. We strive for children to develop a genuine interest in Science and foster curiosity about the world around them. Children will actively participate in experiments, discussions, and research activities with enthusiasm and wonder. Pupils should develop problem-solving skills, applying scientific reasoning to solve problems and make informed decisions. Pupils at Buckshaw will showcase our value of resilience and demonstrate growth mindset, viewing challenges as opportunities for learning. Our children are equipped with the vocabulary to be able to discuss their learning and communicate their scientific understanding. Our Science curriculum serves to inspire and nurture a generation of future scientists, engineers, and innovators. We encourage all children, regardless of gender or background, to see themselves as scientists.
